Our local Councillors play an important role in civic life, and it was with much sadness that I heard the news the David Vickers had passed away last month after a battle with prostate cancer.
David represented the Halesowen South ward since 2008, having previously served as a Councillor for Lye & Wollescote between 2004 and 2006, and had served as Deputy Leader of Dudley Council since 2017. He was deeply committed to public service, having spent a career in the police force, and had a particular passion for improving children’s services based on his own life experiences. He always brought enthusiasm, generosity and a good sense of humour to everything he did, and we worked together over the years on various projects, such as supporting Leasowes Walled Garden and protecting Halesowen’s Green Belt. I will always remember his words of encouragement, and the loyalty he showed to me ever since I was first selected to be a Parliamentary candidate.
The tributes that have been paid to David, from across Halesowen and from across the political spectrum, as well as the great turnout at his funeral recently, are testament to how well respected he was and how missed he will be my many local people. He was a great embodiment of public service.
During my time as an MP I have been fortunate enough to work with many good councillors like David, who give up their time and to make a difference in the communities they are elected to serve. Whilst in the Council Chambers there may be heated battles over budgets and policies, when it comes to the work they do in their wards; I know that many are keen to roll up their sleeves and do the best job they can, and I know that their efforts are appreciated by many local people.
