James has shown his support for the Government’s plan to introduce a new railcard for veterans, that will come into effect on November 11th later this year.
The railcard delivers on a Conservative manifesto pledge to provide discounted rail travel to 830,000 veterans who are not currently covered by existing discounts. It will make it easier for them to travel back to the communities they come from, and families will also be able to travel with them.
The scheme will come into force on Armistice Day, the annual commemoration marking the end of World War 1.
“Our military personnel spend their career making sacrifices and putting their lives on the line to protect our democracy and our freedoms, so it is right that they are recognised for their service”, said James. “It will provide practical help such as improving work prospects and travelling to retraining opportunities, as well as allowing them to be reunited with friends and family in their former communities.”
